Letter from the Superintendent 12-17-2021

Dear Cardinal Family,

Late last evening, the District was made aware of warnings being posted on TikTok about alleged nationwide threats against schools taking place on Friday, December 17, 2021.  These posts are being shared on social media platforms across the country, and law enforcement is aware. The Michigan State Police has posted a statement that they are aware of the threats, but have not found anything credible at this time.  The District has also contacted the Melvindale and Allen Park Police Departments and they are in contact with surrounding law enforcement agencies as well as the Michigan State Police.  Please note there is no information that these warnings are directed toward the Melvindale – Northern Allen Park School District.  These warnings have been circulating on social media throughout the day across the entire country.

Out of an abundance of caution and in an effort to help our students and staff feel safe while at school, there was an increased police presence on our school campuses today.  I continue to thank our local police departments for their efforts in working with us, to keep our community safe.

Melvindale – Northern Allen Park leadership will continue to investigate all reported concerns and act accordingly based on our findings.  Parents, please speak with your children and report any safety concerns to the district administration and law enforcement.  Reports can also be made anonymously to OK2SAY.  I am also pleading with our families to talk to your children about using social media sites mindfully and not sharing information that may be inaccurate.  Sharing inaccurate information that causes a disruption to the school environment could result in school discipline.

Thank you again for your partnership and the trust you place in our district leadership.  Please know our staff remains committed to providing a safe learning environment for your children, and we will do all that we can to make tomorrow an exciting day of learning before the holiday break.

Respectfully,
Dr. Kimberly Soranno
Superintendent
