Student Expectations

Melvindale Early College is a unique educational option that provides students the opportunity to graduate with a high school diploma and a Wayne County Community College associate degree or certificate. This MEC program is exclusively designed to prepare students for postsecondary education and employment opportunities.

Students who are admitted to the Melvindale Early College must meet the following expectations:

  • Students are expected to have excellent attendance and conduct record. 
  • Students are expected to pass classes with a B (83%) average or above.
  • Students must be present face-to-face in all WCCCD classes which require that.
    • Extended vacations are not permitted.
  • Complete all Michigan Merit Curriculum requirements.
  • Attend mandatory monthly cohort/seminar meetings.
    • Failure to attend meetings could result in dismissal from the program. 
  • I understand that acceptance into the MEC requires a commitment through my 13th year of school.
  • After the successful academic completion of my 13th year, I will receive BOTH my high school diploma and an Associate’s Degree or equivalent in number of credits
    • Cohort #2 of Class of 2029 will receive 48 credits, no associates degree.
  • During the 13th year, I will be enrolled in a math or math related course that I must pass to meet graduation requirements.
  • I understand that in order to receive credit I must successfully complete the next course in the sequence at WCCCD and/or successfully complete my first semester.
  • I will behave in a professional manner that shows respect for oneself, classmates, high school and college faculty, and the college facilities and equipment.
  • I will follow the handbook rules and policies of the Melvindale High School, Wayne County Community College and the Melvindale Early College program.
  • I understand that as a student in this program, I am expected to be my own advocate and take responsibility for my progress and learning.
  • I will keep my parents/guardians informed of my progress.
  • I will communicate with my teachers, counselors and/or administrator when I have a question and need help finding solutions.
  • I will stay aware of due dates, schedules and responsibilities by keeping a calendar and checking email.
  • I will commit to doing my best in all classes.
  • I will seek help, tutoring and additional support when needed.
  • As my own self advocate, I understand that I am responsible for my success.
