When shopping, please keep in mind that the desks and cubbies are small. Book bags with wheels will not fit in the student cubbies; and large binders or trapper keepers will take up needed space in student desks.

3rd Grade Reading Law
What is the Read by Grade Three Law?
In 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed a law that requires schools to identify learners who are struggling with reading and writing and to provide additional help. The law states that third graders may repeat third grade if they are more than one grade level behind.

Reading
In 3rd grade, students will transition from using pictures in books to help with words, to read words and make mental pictures. Encourage your student to read often and afterwards talk about what they've read.
Some great questions you can ask with any story are:
- Why do you think the character did that?
- What words would you use to describe the character?
- What do you think will happen next?
- Have students make connections to the story. Did they do something similar to a character in the book, did they read something similar in another book, etc?
- Can you make up a different ending to the story?
- What if the story was told from another character's point of view?
- What was a new fact you learned?
- What is the main idea?

Writing

Citing Text Evidence
Students in third grade are expected to state their answer and give a sentence from the text that supports their answer. They then have to explain why the evidence supports their answer. We use the R.A.C.E format pictured below to help construct our response.
Narrative
Narrative is just a fancy word for story — and this year your child’s stories will be much more complex. Using a narrator, characters, dialogue, and descriptive details, your third grader’s writing should show a story unfolding — including how the characters feel and respond to what happens. The sequence of events should be clear. Instead of using, “The End”. Their story should read like it’s coming to a close.
Research
Student's will connect science and writing together by researching an animal. Then creating a writing piece in order to inform the reader about their animal.
Opinion
Students will start their opinion piece by clearly introducing their topic, stating their opinion, and then giving multiple reasons to support their opinion. They should practice using linking words (e.g. because, therefore, since, for example) to connect their reasons to their opinion, and then end their writing with a conclusion.
